Luke hadnât used his head. When heâd seen Marti being attacked, his only thought had been to get to the guy who was hurting her. Heâd let emotion get the better of him and had ignored his years of training.
Without a weapon, Lukeâs only recourse had been to overtake Hank. But his limp slowed him down, and he shouldnât have been pounding the pavement this soon after surgery. His doctors would have wagged their fingers at him, but he hadnât been thinking of anything except Martiâs safety.
Hank had escaped through the alley. No telling where heâd parked his utility truck, or whether heâd get out of town without being seen.
The pool guy had stopped long enough to fire his weapon at Luke when he barreled blindly around the corner. The memory of another round and the damage it had done played in his mind as the shot reverberated in the narrow alleyway. The guy in the red jacket was a poor shot. He hadnât hit Luke broadside as he had, no doubt, planned to do. Instead he had grazed his leg. The same leg that had been wounded in the Atlanta shootout.
The hit had sent Luke tumbling to the pavement. He had cushioned his fall with his hands and rolled behind a dumpster that offered a bit of protection.
If the guy wanted to kill him, he could have backtracked and fired close range at Luke while he was down. It was doubtful Luke could have responded fast enough to survive.
âLuke!â He heard Martiâs voice, high-pitched and laced with fear.
âIâm okay. Watch yourself. Heâs armed.â
She peered around the corner before she ran to Luke. âYouâve been hit.â
âA flesh wound.â
âYouâre bleeding.â
Marti took off a scarf from her neck and tied it around his thigh.
âIt only grazed me,â he assured her.
âStill, itâs bleeding, and itâs your injured leg.â
âI wasnât using my head, Marti.â
âYou were reacting.â She nodded. âI know the feeling.â
Footsteps sounded as Terry OâReilly ran toward them. âThe hospital notified me. Where is he?â
âGone.â
The sheriff knelt beside Luke, pulled out his phone and called the hospital. âSomeone head this way with a stretcher.â
The second call was to his office. âNotify everyone to be on the lookout for a pool utility truck. The same one weâve been searching for. Might be headed up the mountain or to Lakeside Drive. Send cars in both directions and have someone else cruise downtown. We donât want anyone else hurt today.â
Two aides from the clinic appeared with a stretcher.
Once they wheeled Luke back to the clinic, he turned to Marti. âYouâll find lunch on the desk in your exam room. I left it there before I went to find you.â
âAre you hungry?â she asked.
âIâm starving.â
Luke and Marti ate while the doctor examined both of them. âGood thing the guy didnât get you an inch to the right.â
âI wish he would have missed completely, but Iâll be thankful for small favors.â
Martiâs nurse found her in Lukeâs room. âThe doctor said youâre cleared to go. If your condition changes, he will need to see you again.
